SCUK’s Italian Job
Saturday 19 May – Bank Holiday Monday 28 May 2018
The South Tyrol Mountains are in Northern Italy just over the border from Austria. On this trip we will be based near Brunico/Bruneck, (most towns in the area have both an Italian and Austrian name). We will range far and wide among these mountains riding over many high passes and along the beautiful glacial valleys.
We will be staying 5 nights with ½ board at the lovely 3 star Hotel Brunnerhof in Rasun di Sopra, near Brunico. The hotel has a wellness centre with a rose steam bath, a steam sauna, a bio sauna, infrared cabin, Jacuzzi, tropical showers, foot spa, fresh water fountain, cold grotto and relaxation room. Beauty and massage treatments are available.
To ease the logistics of travelling, finding refreshments, enjoying the roads yet having fun as a group the trip will be limited to 10 rooms, doubles and some singles, which will be allocated as people pay their deposits which are £200 for doubles and £100 for singles.
On European motorways to make progress and give us more time relaxing at the overnight hotels and towns we will be riding at the national speed limits when traffic and road conditions allow. If you wish there may be the opportunity to ride ahead of the group and go flat out on an Autobahn. If all goes well and time allows then I will include a more relaxed riding section each day.
I want everyone to enjoy their riding once we’re in the Tyrol Mountains and not feel pressured to go faster or slower than they wish. So the style of this trip will be ‘free running’; that is when circumstances are right everyone will be free to ride at their own preferred pace to a pre-set meeting point such as ‘at the top of the pass’ or a particular roads junction.
Participants should also be aware this is a trip for riders confident in their abilities since as well as fast motorway riding we will experience tunnels, mountain roads, hairpin bends, high passes (which may be a bit chilly), and probably the occasional heavy rain shower, (mountains are like that)!
During our days in Italy I will lead rides over many passes including the Kaver, Sella, Gardena, Furkel, Giau, Pordoi and Valparola. I also hope to fit in a visit to the new Black & Orange HD Dealership in Bolzano. Of course people are free to choose to do their own thing any time they wish.
Getting an early start, 07.30 at Clackets Lane Services, and using the Eurotunnel the trip will feature stopovers at the Auberge Des Cretes in Falmignoul and the 4 star Waldhotel, West Stuttgart going out and at the 4 star Hotel Krone, Tubingen and 3 star Hotel L’Amandier, Libramont on the return. Starting and ending at Clackets Lane Services the daily distances in miles will be between 260 and 290 miles split into at least four legs with comfort/fuel/food stops each day.
Costs may vary due to the exchange rate etc but are about; Eurotunnel £80, fuel £200 road tolls £20, hotels £950 for doubles and £790 for singles. In addition 10 lunches and 5 dinners plus drinks and souvenirs as you choose.
