Chislehurst Caves - 3rd June
The ride to Chislehurst Caves ( BR7 5NL ) ( ) will start at The Pheasant at Buckland ( RH3 7BG ) on the A25 between Reigate and Dorking from 10am with kickstands up at 10.30am.
We will head to Reigate then up Reigate hill to the M25 ( jun 8 ). We will travel along M25 to junction 6 Godstone where we will pick up the A25 towards Westerham, Sundridge, then head north to pick up A21 to Bromley and the Caves.
The ride is 45miles and arriving about 11.30am we have time for a drink before taking the organised 45mins guided tour which costs £6 adults with concessions for seniors.
The caves are a labyrinth of man made tunnels, forming a maze up to 30 metres below ground and were dug for chalk, used in lime burning and brick making and also for flints to fire the tinderboxes and flintlock guns of years ago.
It became an underground town as the largest deep air-raid shelter outside London protecting over 15000 people during the Blitz. In the 1950, 60, 70’s it was a venue for pop and rock concerts.
On completion of the tour the cafe is open for lunch and the gift shop or head home which is easy to pick up the A21 to the jun4 of M25.
