We will take a DFDS ferry from Dover to Dunkirk then ride some 200 miles Nijmegen where we will stay at the Hotel Van Der Valk.
Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands. With its many welcoming, historic streets its also one of the best shopping cities. It has a large selection of shops, cafes, terraces and excellent little restaurants where we can dine in the evenings. We can also take an evening river cruise on the Pancake Boat.
We’ll visit some of the sites associated with the World War II Operation Market Garden. We’ll follow the route of 30 Corps as they struggled in vain over heavily defended narrow roads and bridges to reach the embattled Airborne troops at Arnhem, (portrayed in the book and film A Bridge Too Far). We’ll visit Arnhem and the Airborne Museum Hartenstein and memorials in Oosterbeek. We will be riding on the good local roads with time to take in the lovely scenery and eating local foods.
We may have time to take a trip along the Rhine River valley into Germany and along the Meuse River valley back into Holland.
